The Business Educators Association of Queensland recently hosted its 2018 Annual Conference, ‘Gaining Momentum’ at the Brisbane Convention Centre.
Financial Basics Foundation’s National Program Manager, Damian Nicholson attended and had the opportunity to meet and network with some of the 400 teachers from across the state.
The FBF session focussed on the features of our Financial Literacy in Practice (FLIP), Operation Financial Literacy (OFL) and ESSI Money Game resources and how they can be incorporated into the classroom. Teachers in attendance had the opportunity to play ESSI Money PLUS and explore the many personal finance teaching and learning opportunities the game presents. Session attendees also investigated the teacher notes, activities, videos and student worksheets available in the full suite of resources.
One of the highlights of the session was an excited outburst from one attendee when she realised that she was going to save herself hours of effort by using OFL resources in preparing to offer FNS10115 - Certificate I in Financial Services at her school!
The session culminated in a financial literacy quiz, with hard copies of FBF materials, chocolates and cash-cards amongst the prizes awarded to the placegetters. The most sought-after prize was the printed binder of Operation Financial Literacy materials (and a $50 cash-card), won by Synthia from Coombabah SHS. The OFL binder includes a printed copy of all 12 OFL modules (over 600 pages of resources) which Synthia and her colleagues will now be able to quickly and easily peruse and reproduce for use in the classroom.
Thank you to the BEAQ for inviting the Financial Basics Foundation to attend and present at this conference. You could not have done anything more for us, and all those involved in the organisation and running of this conference are to be commended. See you in 2019!
