FBCF receives grant from Metlife Foundation to better financial literacy for young Australians

The Financial Basics Community Foundation (FBCF) is thrilled to announce it has received a $110,000 USD grant from MetLife Foundation to develop and deliver the Financial Literacy Life Skills Resources Project. Designed to address the urgent needs of young Australians with low literacy and numeracy skills, this project will deliver practical, inclusive, and accessible financial education resources that help bridge the gap in learning and empower young people to take control of their financial futures.

“We know that a lack of financial literacy can have a serious impact on a young person’s wellbeing, particularly those with low literacy and numeracy skills. Without the tools and confidence to make informed financial decisions, these young Australians are more vulnerable to hardship and exclusion. This grant from MetLife Foundation allows us to bridge that gap by developing practical, inclusive resources that meet these young people where they are, giving them the knowledge and confidence to build a secure and independent future”

The Financial Literacy Life Skills Resources Project will be a comprehensive resource package designed to help youth build essential financial literacy skills, improve financial resilience, and support long-term wellbeing. Building on FBF’s established and trusted educational materials, adapting them for schools and community organisations that support youth who can benefit from this initiative, the resources will promote positive financial behaviours and equip young people with the confidence to manage their personal finances effectively. MetLife Foundation is focused on driving inclusive economic mobility by addressing the needs of people on low-income around the world. This initiative aligns with MetLife Foundation’s commitment to improving financial health and promoting equitable access to financial knowledge.

“We’re delighted to be able to support the great work Financial Basics Community Foundation carries out to support the financial literacy of young people in Australia. Financial literacy is a critical life skill, and this project will help support building a confident future and uplifting young Australians’ financial wellbeing.”

The Financial Literacy Life Skills Resources Project will begin with a pilot phase to test and refine educational materials to ensure they effectively support young people with low literacy and numeracy. At the same time, FBCF will work closely with educators and community workers to ensure the resources are practical, impactful, and easy to implement across diverse learning environments. FBCF is grateful for this partnership and looks forward to delivering meaningful impact for the young people who need it most. The full project launched in May 2025.
